Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STI in the U.S. — here’s what you need to know - Yahoo Life

Image
Chlamydia is the most common STI caused by bacteria, but because it's typically asymptomatic, many people can have it and not know it. (Photo: Getty Images) There are more than 20 types of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but some are more prevalent than others — namely, chlamydia, which is the most common STI caused by bacteria. (HPV, also known as human papillomavirus, is the most common STI caused by a virus.) In fact, chlamydia trachomatis — the bacteria behind chlamydia infections — is "responsible for the greatest number of sexually transmitted infections" worldwide. In 2020, nearly 1.6 million cases of chlamydia were reported in the U.S, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "making it the most common notifiable sexually transmitted infection in the United States for that year." As Dr. Saahir Khan, infectious disease expert with Keck Medicine of USC, tells Yahoo Life: "Chlamydia has been infecting humans for mille

Veregen (Sinecatechins) Topical: Uses, Side Effects, Dosages - Verywell Health

Image
What Is Veregen? Veregen ( sinecatechins ) is a prescription topical ointment used to treat Condylomata acuminat a (external warts on the outside of the genitals and anus) caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Veregen is prescribed for immunocompetent (a healthily functioning immune system) individuals 18 and older. Veregen contains the active ingredient, sinecatechins. Sinecatechins are natural substances found in specific green tea leaves. Moreover, Veregen is classified as a keratolytic. Keratolytics are compounds that can break down the outer layers of the skin and can decrease the thickness of psoriatic plaque (scaly, red patches on the skin). Additionally, keratolytic medications are used to treat calluses and acne. Although the exact way Veregen works is not fully understood, sinecatechins contain antioxidant (substances that may prevent different types of cell damage) activity, which is thought to play a role in treat

Association between serum vitamin C and HPV infection in ... - BioMed Central

Data sources and study population This cross-sectional study was restricted to women aged 18–59 years who completed HPV tests in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2003 to 2006. Responses coded as "don't know", "refused," "inadequate" or "missing" in the original NHANES data were treated as missing. Participants with missing HPV data, covariates, or VC levels were excluded. The NHANES is a nationally representative health survey in the US designed and administered by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is an ongoing survey that uses a complex multistage sampling design to obtain a representative sample of the US population during each collection cycle. It collected information on demographic indicators and health outcomes through interviews, face-to-face examinations, and laboratory tests. Each year, the NHANES examines a

Vaginal Skin Tags: What They Are & What to Do About Them - theSkimm

Image
You might have noticed something new down there. It's not an ingrown hair, and it's not quite a pimple . It might be something entirely different: a vaginal skin tag. Here's how to identify genital skin tags, what causes them, and what to do about them.  What are vaginal skin tags?  Skin tags are soft and small skin growths. About half the size of a pencil eraser. They're made up of loose fibers of collagen (the protein that helps make up skin) and can contain blood vessels. They usually grow on a "stalk" (or peduncle), so they may be raised on the skin. They can resemble warts, moles, or a piece of hanging skin. And can be flesh-colored, but have the potential to be darker than the surrounding skin.  Vaginal skin tags can appear near the vagina or around the vulva. And usually, they're harmless. But depending on where your skin tag is , it could get caught in (or irritated by) your clothing or chafe when you're active. W

Analysis of High-Risk HPV mRNA vs DNA Testing in Screening for ... - The ASCO Post

Image
By Matthew Stenger Posted: 7/7/2022 12:55:00 PM Last Updated: 7/7/2022 12:50:33 PM Advertisement In a systematic review and meta-analysis reported in The Lancet Oncology , Arbyn et al found that the performance of a high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) mRNA test in screening for cervical cancer was similar to that of validated hrHPV DNA tests in detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia of grade 2 or worse (CIN2+) or 3 or worse (CIN3+). Study Details In the literature review, it was found that the only mRNA test with sufficient data to be included in the meta-analysis was the APTIMA HPV Test. The analysis population included 29,677 patients enrolled in eight studies assessing the cross-sectional accuracy of APTIMA vs hrHPV DNA assays in primary cervical cancer screening. Key Findings Compared with validated DNA assays, APTIMA exhibited similar sensitivity (relati

Pulsed Dye Lasers for Cosmetic Procedures - Dermatology Times

Image
Pulsed dye laser (PDL) has been one of the mainstay treatments for eliminating dilated blood vessels in the skin. It is commonly used to treat port wine stains, hemangiomas, and other vascular lesions. PDLs work by using selective thermolysis to target blood vessels in the skin. The laser destroys the blood vessels and leaves the surrounding skin undamaged. The PDL delivers pulsed laser energy at a wavelength between 585 and 595 nm, which is absorbed by oxyhemoglobin and thereby destroys superficial vessels. 1 PDLs are now being used for several different dermatologic conditions. They go far beyond the treatment of port wine stains and hemangiomas and have shown success in treating keloids, rosacea, and many other skin conditions. Rosacea PDLs are an effective treatment for rosacea. Patients find improvement in erythema and telangiectasia. Improvement in itching, burning, and stinging has also been observed in studies. However, some patients do report purpura after treatment, which can

Toragen Explores ‘Novel’ Treatment for HPV-Induced Cancer - San Diego Business Journal

Image
Sometimes drug discovery involves taking a closer look at drugs that have already been discovered. That is the story behind San Diego-based Toragen, Inc., a company pursuing treatments for human papilloma virus (HPV) and the cancers it causes with a drug originally developed to treat influenza. In 2018, Toragen founder Dr. Andrew Sharabi MD, PhD was researching the flu drug in his lab at UC San Diego when he discovered it causes direct inhibition of a protein that the HPV virus produces when it infects human cells. Dr. Sandra Coufal, MD CEO Toragen, Inc. "That was transformational because it's a mechanism of action that's a novel one to treat HPV induced cancer," said Toragen CEO Dr. Sandra Coufal, MD. The discovery soon began attracting talent to the new company, such as Toragen Director of R&D Richard Lumpkin, PhD – a 30-year veteran of developing and commercializing early stage biotechs – who helped Sharabi develop the science behind how the drug wo

Higher HPV Infection Risk in Women With CF and Lung Transplant ... - Cystic Fibrosis News Today

Image
Women with cystic fibrosis (CF) who had a lung transplant are at higher risk of testing positive for the human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that can cause many cancers, a French study found. Researchers also observed that it was more common for these women than for the general population to have cervical dysplasia, or an abnormal growth of cells on the cervix, the lowermost part of the uterus. Study findings are in line with similar research in Canada, which reported a four times higher likelihood of cervical dysplasia among female CF patients with a lung transplant than other women with CF.   Cervical dysplasia is not cancer, but the precancerous cells can become malignant. Therefore, "cervical cancer screening and prevention should be promoted among people with CF," the researchers wrote. Genital warts treatments: Causes, diagnosis, and testing - Medical News Today

Image
Genital warts treatments include topical medications, such as creams and ointments, and surgical procedures, including freezing, excision, and laser removal. Genital warts occur due to the human papillomavirus (HPV), for which there is no cure, so these warts may return after treatment. Genital warts, also called condylomata acuminata, are warts that appear as small bumps on or near the genitals or anus. This article discusses treatments for genital warts, including medications, surgical procedures, and home remedies. About 400,000 people in the United States get genital warts each year. HPV types 6 and 11 cause 90% of all cases of genital warts. Around 30% of genital warts will go away by themselves within 4 months of appearing, and around 90% of HPV infections will resolve themselves within 2 years of infection. However, this virus can have a latency period, meaning symptoms may appear or reoccur months or years after the initial infection. A person may contract HPV and develop gen

Identifying antibiotics based on structural differences in the ... - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health problem. Despite the enormous efforts made in the last decade, threats from some species, including drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae , continue to rise and would become untreatable. The development of antibiotics with a different mechanism of action is seriously required. Here, we identified an allosteric inhibitory site buried inside eukaryotic mitochondrial heme-copper oxidases (HCOs), the essential respiratory enzymes for life. The steric conformation around the binding pocket of HCOs is highly conserved among bacteria and eukaryotes, yet the latter has an extra helix. This structural difference in the conserved allostery enabled us to rationally identify bacterial HCO-specific inhibitors: an antibiotic compound against ceftriaxone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae . Molecular dynamics combined with resonance Raman spectroscopy and stopped-flow spectroscopy revealed an allosteric obstruction in the substrate accessing chan
