How to know if wart removal is effective and when to stop - Medical News Today

Image
Warts are harmless growths that often appear on the hands and feet. Some warts go away by themselves, but others may persist until a person gets treatment. People looking to remove warts can self-treat them at home or consult a doctor. If a person has a weakened immune system or an underlying health condition, such as diabetes, they should check with their doctor before removing any warts. This article looks at the different types of warts and the treatment options. It also explains how to know when wart treatment has been effective. Warts are harmless skin growths that vary in appearance depending on their type. They can occur anywhere on the body but commonly affect the hands. The human papillomavirus (HPV) causes warts, which can readily spread between people in close contact. If a person comes into contact with the virus, it can infect the surface layer of the skin, creating a wart. Having cuts or other damage to the skin makes this more likely to occur. Som

What are the symptoms of HPV in women? Signs, testing, and treatment - Medical News Today

Image
There are many types of HPV. This is a very common infection that usually presents with no symptoms. However, without treatment, some types of HPV could cause cancer. Prevention is, therefore, very important. HPV infections usually clear from the body within 2 years. However, if certain HPV strains persist over several years, they may induce cell changes that cause cancer. This article will outline the different symptoms of HPV, some treatment options, and some prevention methods. HPV spreads through sexual and intimate skin-to-skin contact. There are over 200 different types of HPV. Different types of HPV carry different risks. Low risk HPV rarely develops into cancer but can cause symptoms, such as genital warts, around the genitals and anus. These symptoms are not always visible, however. For example, they may occur inside the anus, vagina, or cervix. High risk HPV may not present with any symptoms. Without treatment, however, it can cause several cancers, in

Social media may influence parents' views on HPV vaccination | Penn State University - Penn State News

HERSHEY, Pa. — Studies by Penn State College of Medicine researchers demonstrate that misinformation on social media may affect parents' willingness to have their children vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV). They also found that some parents are in favor of establishing standards for combating HPV vaccine misinformation on social media. Prior research conducted by the Pew Research Center showed that 72% of adults use social media, and many rely on it for news and information. However, misleading and inaccurate information is easily shared online and can be especially harmful when it comes to health-related issues. Social media has an instrumental role in shaping public opinion, educating about HPV and overcoming hesitancy related to HPV vaccination. The researchers conducted two studies to assess how misinformation and social media messaging affect HPV vaccination efforts. In the first study, a group of investigators conducted an experimental comparison of vaccine-re

Rich Delgrosso found the lump while shaving. It was on the left side of his neck and it seemed to grow bigger by the day. He made an appointment with his ear, nose, and throat doctor. "He said the odds were 50/50 that it was an infection," recalls the 56-year-old father of two from Pleasantville, New York. "I asked, 'What's the other 50?'" It was a possibility no one wanted to hear: Cancer. Rich underwent a biopsy and learned he had squamous cell carcinoma that had originated on the base of his tongue. His cancer, the doctor told him, was caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Rich was shocked. "I knew HPV could cause cancer," he says, "but I thought it was only cervical cancer in women." It's true that HPV, a sexually transmitted virus, does cause the majority of cervical cancer cases in women. But it can also cause a variety of cancers in men, too, some of which are on the rise. HPV led to a five-fold increase of he

Introduction To date, >200 human papillomavirus (HPV) types have been detected. 1–3 The most common HPV transmission route is sexual contact. 2 Sexually active individuals will acquire ≥ 1 anogenital HPV genotype at some point in their lives. 4 Sensitive PCR monitoring has indicated that most HPV infections are cleared by the immune system and disappear within 1–2 y without clinical complications. 5,6 Epidemiological evidence for HPV carcinogenicity was first presented by zurHausen in 1983 and accepted in 1995 by the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO). 4 HPV carcinogenicity was first established for cervical precancers and cancers. Cervical carcinogenesis is a multi-step process starting with HPV infection of the cervical epithelium. However, cancer onset occurs after persistent or recurring HPV infection. 7 There is ample evidence to support the hypothesis that host immunological status and HPV-induced immune changes

Most bumps on the vagina are normal — here's when to see a doctor - Insider

Image
Bumps on the vagina are common and are often not a cause for concern.  Sometimes bumps on the vagina can indicate genital warts or herpes, which need medical attention. If you're concerned about a bump or it isn't going away, see your doctor.  Visit Insider's Health Reference library for more advice. It can be worrisome to feel a bump anywhere on your body, but when it's on or near your vagina, it's especially unnerving. But before assuming the worst, many bumps are normal and harmless.  Skin growths such as seborrheic keratosis or skin tags, and common bumps like ingrown hairs or cysts generally don't require treatment, unless they cause irritation or become infected, says Alicia Little, MD, PhD, a dermatologist specializing in vulvar skin conditions at Yale Medicine.  Sexually transmitted infections (STI) may also cause bumps around your genital area, though there are other symptoms you have to watch out for such as visible sores or skin ulcers
